Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860-1908) was a pianist and composer who played a significant role in the development of American academic music. His composer's personality was formed under the influence of the aesthetic views of F. Liszt, the works by R. Schumann, E. Grieg. Lyric images romantic reverie, a variety of moods characteristic of MacDowell's music are reflected in the program etudes, op. 39 and op. 46.
