The emergence and implementation of fascist movements in a regional context is a significant field of research, if we want to understand better how societies can drift into authoritarianism. This outstanding collection of case studies focuses on the early fascist period, before movements such as National Socialism in Germany or Fascism in Italy established themselves on a national level. Eleven chapters highlight how differently fascist movements articulated their policies and goals in regional and local contexts and what methods they used to achieve them. Looking at the rural and urban areas of Italy and Germany, at Spain in the interwar period, at personalities and strategies on a large scale, the volume contains a large number of previously unknown studies that represent a valuable addition to our knowledge of the first fascist movements.
