Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. During the years 1910-11 and 1911-12 the writer delivered at the Universite Nouvelle of Brussels a course of lectures on the sources of Keyboard Music in England. It has occurred to him that this material formed the foundation for the production of a book containing the substance of these lectures. Keyboard music owes much to England. At the time when in the other countries of Europe it still dragged in the wake of vocal and organ music, in the British Isles it acquired an individuality and a technique of its own which place it on a very high level as a factor in evolution. Moreover, there has come down to us from the period of these sources - which extend from about 1550 to l63o - a considerable quantity of material, the aesthetic value of which cannot be gainsaid.
