Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. A complete work, adequate to the importance of the subject, would require innumerable researches and studies, and one volume would not be sufficient. Yet, it would scarcely be possible to give anything beyond a concise idea of a subject entirely too vast and com plex to be treated in a strict and exact manner. Let us consider all the metals actually employed, from those which are essentially industrial, to the pre cions metals which belong to the arts rather than to industry proper; and up to those modern metals so little known that they still remain exclusively within the limits of scientific investigation. When we see these various metals combining with each other, one by one, two by two, three by three, &c., and in various proportions, we may well ask if it be possible to create a methodical and absolute treatise on alloys.
