On Scribes and Scholars

The studies in this volume are dedicated to Prof. Wayne Horowitz, professor of Assyriology in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and cover a wide range of topics reflecting his diverse research interests - from Mesopotamian scientific texts, through Akkadian and biblical literature, cuneiform tablets from Canaan, up to administrative documents relating to Judeans in Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid Mesopotamia. The essays are arranged according to the main topics of Wayne Horowitz's research, and divided into three main parts: Mesopotamian Astronomy, including essays by specialists on ancient Mesopotamian astronomy and science; Mesopotamian Literature and Scribal Lore, featuring studies of various Babylonian and Assyrian scholarly, historical, and literary texts; and Ancient Israel and Judah in Light of Mesopotamian Sources, with papers examining biblical literary, religious, and historical episodes and themes in light of Mesopotamian sources, as well as the history of Judeans in Babylonia.
