Dr Gordon, a prominent artist, died mysteriously in the Cairngorms in 1958. Also, mysteriously, from being a SOE operator in France, 1940-45 his considerable fortune seems to have emerged. Scattered clues, some perceived as such by Hugh's eccentric father, he hid, not expecting to have need to be absent from his responsibilities. Hugh in Ballater and Hide in Bordeaux, a thousand miles apart, separately find clues before meeting in Ballater to gain some control over these matters. This is the middle part of a trilogy; other books take the characters between 1940-58 and post 1958.
