George Samuel Evans was born June 5, 1876, in Visalia, Tulare County, California. His parents were James and Mary N. Evans. He was the elder of two children, the other being a brother, Fred Evans.<br><br>When George Evans was about fourteen years of age, the family moved to Oakland. There he was educated in the high school. He spent one year at the University of California, then took up the study of the law, and was admitted to the bar in 1897. He devoted himself earnestly to his profession, and had made steady progress in it.<br><br>In 1901 Mr. Evans entered local politics, when he was elected on the Republican ticket as one of the Library Trustees of the Oakland Free Library. To this position he was re-elected in 1903, and was serving as such Trustee at the time of his death, May 26, 1904.<br><br>Mr. Evans had been connected with the First Unitarian Church of Oakland since boyhood. He was a member of many of its organizations, and always an enthusiastic worker in its activities.<br><br>Reading was with him a passion. He loved virile, robust books. The record of noble and stir ring action never failed to arouse in him the glow of enthusiastic admiration.
