Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. In the matter of type, ornament, and printing generally, I have endeavoured to retain the old — time flavour of the early French and English editions, but I have never aimed at a facsimile reprint; and I need hardly add that in the text I have preserved the transliterations, admirably phonetic as they all are, to be found in the first French. Editions, and have avoided attempting any work that might be open to the charge of ''restoration'' in the manner too often practised in the art of Architecture at the present day. In accordance with these general principles I have given a translation of Bernier''s Dedication to the French King, and of his Address to the Reader, both of which have been hitherto omitted from every edition except the first. They contain, as was generally the case at the period, a great deal of valuable personal history not to be found elsewhere, and all worthy of preservation.
