Traditional Culture and Colonial Encounters

The aim of this volume is to bring together scholars working on Northeast India and its periphery in the context of traditional culture and colonial encounters. Traditional culture as a way of life in pre-modern societies is associated with heritage and the natural environment. In Northeast India, the region has experienced transition from tradition to modernity through pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial periods of history. It may be noted that the colonial policies of the British drastically transformed the traditional governance, disrupted local economies and changed the religious and cultural landscape of the region. The concerns of India's Northeast have largely centered around the questions of identity, governance and development. The fifteen chapters in this collection showcase the rich repository of local history and provide a platform to preserve the voices of the communities through multidisciplinary perspectives.
