The Fall are world-enders, a species that leaves nothing but death and destruction in their wake. For thousands of years, the Fall have terrorized the galaxy, tearing apart civilization after civilization, world after world. And Earth is their next target.

In an effort to fight the Fall, humanity scrambles to assemble the Planetary Defense. Elaine has been recruited to compete in a series of trials for a coveted spot in the Youth Division of the Defense. If she succeeds, her family will be offered safe haven during the war. If she fails, she and her family are doomed.

Elaine''s mission is simple: pass the trials and protect her family, no matter the cost. But the trials are not all they seem, and the castle that hosts them carries deadly secrets of its own.
