The New Territories is a rather strange chapter in the history of Hong Kong. The United Kingdom had leased this large area of land to expand the colonial territory of Hong Kong. As a result, the colonial history of Hong Kong was ended because of the lease period of the land. The Return in 1997 to change Hong Kong's fate is due to the Special Clauses for Extension of Hong Kong's Border Sites signed between Britain and the Qing government in 1898.Therefore, irrespective of differences in land area or different conditions of occupation, the history of the New Territories has its own uniqueness. It is not a natural extension of the history of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.Over the past half century, scholars both at home and abroad have used the New Territories as a model of the Ming and Qing lineage society in China and published many monographs on New Territories studies. However, the New Territories has a rich history, and many research areas still need to be explored and expanded. A large number of documents are still to be explored and utilized. This book is a compilation of the research results of Hong Kong history experts and scholars. It aims to review the basic aspects of the early history of the New Territories during British rule from the perspectives of politics, administration, and land. The book also lists Chinese translations of several important documents that the British Government has leased the New Territories, and it provides readers with convenient and original reference data for exploring the history of the New Territories.
