This book presents a comprehensive guide to the modeling of thermal radiation, covering the current advanced methods in this field involved in both engineering applications and physical sciences. It guides the reader through the interaction of electromagnetic radiation, on the one hand with gases, plasmas, liquids, or solids at all spatial scales, from those of atoms, molecules, or electrons to that of a continuous medium, and, on the other hand, with divided media, statistically upscaled to the scale of spatially superimposed continuous media, characterized by spatial presence probabilities. The book is divided into four parts, the first of which deals with radiation-matter interactions at an elementary scale (photon, molecule, particle or wave), followed by the radiative intensity evolution along trajectories through a semi-transparent continuous Beerian medium. Part 2 develops the radiative properties of an opaque body, and of a transparent and a semi-transparent medium and introduces simple analytical models of radiative transfer. Part 3 characterizes the radiative properties of all the media encountered in applications: one phase media (gases, plasmas, and dense media including sets of particles) and two phase media (macro-porous media, often non-Beerian). Part 4 focuses on the couplings of radiation with the other heat transfer modes within one phase media, in particular in the case of forced and free turbulent flows. Special attention is also paid to radiative transfer within statistically modeled macro-porous media and the associated numerical treatments. Advanced ray-tracing and Monte-Carlo numerical methods are presented in detail.
