The Jefferson Bible

What has come to be known as the "Jefferson Bible" consists of a document he titled "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth," and some additional letters and documents. Jefferson prepared it in large part as an answer to a lifetime of critics who questioned his faith and Christianity. The main body of the document was prepared by cutting and pasting the four gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Luke, Mark, and John) eliminating contradictions, inconsistencies, and what Jefferson considered implausible magic. Notably miracles are notably omitted and the narrative ends with the burial of Jesus; that is no physical resurrection. Jefferson was very much a man of his times, the Age of Enlightenment. It is hard to imagine a successful politician of this day, at least in the U.S., having the courage to run the Bible through a word processing program (the modern cut and paste) to state the edited result is what he actually believes.
