Deadly Islamic extremists bear down on Timbuktu, a city where several libraries contain priceless manuscripts. Historically, these terrorists destroy anything they consider contrary to the Sharia precepts. A desperate plan is formulated to ensure the preservation of the documents. The concept is simple-get them the hell out Jac Teerink and Elaine Prevot carry carefully packed suitcases containing two ancient handwritten copies of the Quran. Also in their care is a one-of-a-kind history of North Africa prepared before most linguists believe a written language existed in the area. Instructions provided to the couriers are simple: drive the documents from Timbuktu to Nyala, Sudan. Deliver them to a Professor Ammon Darwishi. No sweat. But the Boko Haram has other plans. Jac and Elaine are ambushed in Chad, just hours before entering Sudan. Jac is beaten, nailed to a tree, and left to die. Elaine is tortured, raped, and won't live through the night.
