The Cotswolds constitute a distinctive region with a gentle, well-loved landscape. The Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlement and the powerful influence of medieval lords of the manor all contributed to the pattern of hamlet and village, church and parish, the system of farming in open fields and to the creation of the market towns.
