그리고 우리가 멀리 항해해야 한다는 뜻은 아니었습니다.

The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little

과학은 각자의 방향으로 노력해왔지만 지금까지 우리에게 거의 해를 끼치지 않았습니다.

but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up terrifying vistas of reality

그러나 언젠가는 분리된 지식을 조각조각 모아 현실에 대한 무서운 전망이 열릴 것입니다.

and of our frightful position within this reality will become clear to us

그리고 이 현실 속에서 우리가 처한 무서운 위치가 우리에게 분명해질 것입니다.

And we shall either go mad from the revelation, or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age

그리고 우리는 계시에 미쳐버릴 수도 있고, 아니면 치명적인 빛으로부터 도망쳐 새로운 암흑시대의 평화와 안전 속으로 도망칠 수도 있습니다.
