The Afghan is a character sketch of a typical Afghan based on a collection of Afghan proverbs that are grouped according to themes. This thematic presentation, poetically written by an American who lived in Afghanistan for a quarter of a century, offers a unique and multifaceted view of the Afghan psyche and culture. The author was inspired to write this book after 9/11 when a plethora of one-dimensional news items appeared describing fanatic, gun-toting Afghans and faceless, brutalized women.The Afghan includes an insightful foreword and rare color photographs of Afghan men, women and children in a variety of settings that complement the text. By learning something about the strengths and shortcomings of Afghan culture, we may also learn something about ourselves.
