Social stratification, refers to the division of a population into strata, one on top of another. There are, ofcourse, important differences between social stratification and geological stratification. By the term 'social stratification' we mean a horizontal division of a society into higher and lower social units. The human society, as such, is heterogeneous in nature. It is divided into various economic, social, political and religious classes. Unstratified classless society with 'real equality' is no more than a myth.
