The links between Scotland and the countries of the Baltic region can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages; however, the main period of Scottish settlement occurred from around 1560 to 1650.This volume marks the fourth in a series. It is based on more than 40 manuscript collections and published works as well as numerous primary and secondary sources found in the British Isles and continental Europe, including the Aberdeen City Archives, the Dundee Shipping Lists, and the Danish Archives (Copenhagen).

Arranged alphabetically, the entries give each person's name, place of residence in eastern Europe, and the date and record and its source. There are often references to the person's place of origin in Scotland, occupation, relationship to other persons named (such as parents, spouse, children, membership in a fraternal organization, etc.
