This book describes the long, ongoing campaign to secure and preserve for posterity the primeval qualities of these large natural areas. In tracing the campaign's ups and downs, the narrative chronicles a chapter in the regional History of Minnesota, and to a lesser extent, Ontario. But primarily the book illustrates the development of an idea -- wilderness preservation -- an American concept that is finding wider acceptance elsewhere in the world.
