Sanibel

"No man will ever abuse me again." So says Sanibel Crom, an orphaned mulatto woman in mid-nineteenth century New England who is determined to overcome the subservient role assigned to her by her race and sex. Set in the hills of the Berkshires, the story traces Sanibel's rise from a barmaid to a woman of property. But to succeed she must deny her racial and sexual identity and confront the hatred for those who violated her in her youth. This struggle of one woman mirrors the struggle of all nineteenth century women who had the strength to succeed but forgot how to love.
