There were in fact two distinct revolutions that year: the February Revolution saw the overthrow of the Tsarist regime, followed by the formation of the Provisional Government, and the October Revolution in which the Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, overthrew the Provisional Government. Russia's involvement in World War I had led to heavy losses in a country which was economically and socially far behind the rest of Europe, and offered few opportunities for fair advancement. Soon after the October Revolution, civil war broke out between the Bolshevik "reds" on the one side and the "whites" and other socialist factions on the other. The Russian Civil War resulted in the deaths and suffering of millions of people, and in 1922 the victorious Bolsheviks established the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
