At the time of the Roman invasion of AD 43 present- day Dorset was the territory of the Iron Age tribe called the Durotriges. The Second Legion Augusta under the command of Vespasian (later to be Emperor) was responsible for the conquest of the area. The extent to which, within a generation, Roman ideas, life and language were adopted was remarkable. In addition to an amphitheatre and an aqueduct (both of which can be seen today). Dorchester (Dumovaria) boasted public baths.

This book is the result of forty years of fieldwork and practical research in Dorset by the author, and hopefully it will be of use both to inhabitants of the county and to visitors. Although written in a popular style, those engaged in research into Roman Britain in general will be able to find material that is otherwise not yet easily available in print, such as the Town House in Dorchester and the author's own work on the Dorchester Aqueduct and the Dewlish Roman Villa.
