Rock Mechanics - Volume 2

Volume 2 of 3 on Rock Mechanics of the proceedings of the ISRM symposium, held in Aachen, on the 26-28 May 1982. Focus Areas of the ISRM Symposium included technical sessions which addressed topics such as the design of unlined hydro power shafts and tunnels, underground storage of nuclear waste, and pressure tunnel construction. The proceedings include: Volume 1: Rock mechanical investigations and large-span caverns. Volume 2: Pressure tunnels, tunneling machines, and underground storage. Volume 3: Further papers on caverns and pressure shafts. Papers presented, such as those on unlined hydro power shafts and nuclear waste storage, emphasized the necessity of integrating engineering judgment with numerical methods (e.g., finite element methods) in rock mechanics design.
