One autumn afternoon, the easygoing Rip Van Winkle wanders into the mountains to escape his nagging wife. There, he encounters a group of mysterious figures and drinks from a strange flagon. When he wakes, the world around him has changed—his beard has grown long, his village is unfamiliar, and America is no longer ruled by a king. Rip Van Winkle is one of Washington Irving’s most beloved tales, blending folklore, humor, and fantasy. A story about time, change, and the price of idleness, it remains a timeless classic in American literature. WASHINGTON IRVING [1783–1859] was an American author, historian, and diplomat. During his lifetime, Irving was highly esteemed as a writer, producing historical works, travelogues, and biographies of figures such as George Washington and Christopher Columbus. For posterity, he is primarily remembered as a short story writer, with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow being his most famous. Between 1842–1854, Irving served as the U.S. ambassador to Spain.
