Reflections of a Girl

The word "as-sāniḥ" refers to what comes to you from your right side, and it is commonly associated, for some people, with feelings of blessing and optimism. This stands in contrast to "al-bāriḥ", which comes from the left and is linked to pessimism. The term "sunuḥ" is also connected with the idea of granting space or presenting something, as in the expressions "an idea occurred to me" or "an opportunity presented itself."May Ziadeh—one of the pioneers of women''s literature in the first half of the twentieth century and a central figure of the Arab literary renaissance—chose the title of her book "Sawāniḥ Fatāh" (Glimpses/Reflections of a Girl) to cloak her feminist perspective with the ornaments of grace and blessing, and to emphasize the sufficiency of presenting her views. In this work, May was able to convey her thoughts and reflections on the human soul and on life in a text that is both delightful and eloquent, reflecting her mastery of language, her skill in expressing herself with clarity and elegance, and her ability to innovate and develop with balance and creativity.
