Davvera of Coins is cursed with magic so dangerous that it saw her banished to the Salt Palace in a far-flung corner of Tarocco. But when the beloved Queen of Wands dies and Davvera's Maiden Card is selected from the Deck, her exile is over. Whether she wants it or not, she is in line for the crown. After all, the Cards never lie.

Now, Davvera and five others face trials designed to reveal the next true queen. If treacherous terrain and shapeshifting immortals weren't enough, it appears everyone is conspiring against her. Not least the arrogant but handsome knight Ciro, who is sworn to serve her but whose brooding presence is more hindrance than help.

The clock is ticking. Without a Queen of Wands on the Deck, disturbing forces encroach and threaten to plunge Tarocco into darkness. As the spark between Ciro and Davvera crackles into a wildfire, Davvera must show the one Card she's loath to play-if it doesn't destroy her first.
