Prevention of Hospital Acquired Thrombosis

This book explores the key factors underpinning the development and management of clinical conditions associated with VTE and the associated pathophysiology of clotting. It underlines the cost to both the individual and society drawing on relevant epidemiological studies and reports from interested professional and governmental organisations. The strategies for preventing VTE are explored with regard to both chemical and mechanical approaches. Two key elements of the book are: (1) the discussion relating to risk factors for VTE and how to assess for the risk of VTE in both the medical and surgical settings and (2)how to implement thromboprophylaxis. The latter is considered from both a practical and organisational perspective as it is the implementation of effective thromboprophylaxis that will help reduce the number of unnecessary deaths each year from VTE.
