The intent of the present book is to argue that drug discovery needs to return to paradigms that have proven to be successful and that the newer technologies need to be incorporated into these models to the extent that they are needed, e.g., to answer questions - not generate data to then ask questions. Furthermore, the monograph will debate the increased impact of business-driven decision making on the science of drug discovery and development. Has it stifled innovation? Are the short timelines and needs of the business world compatible with the time it takes (6-15 years) to bring a drug to market? What will it take to effect a sea change to make drug discovery efforts more useful and productive? Do venture capitalists envision investing in a new healthcare technology/ drug discovery opportunity as a choice between a biotech and a social networking company? A new Genentech opportunity versus Groupon? Can drug research and development be left solely to the whims of Wall St.?
