Oil and Gas Pipelines: Policies, Federal Programs and Security Issues

Growth in U.S. natural gas production has driven the development of new pipelines from producing regions to consuming markets. Over 300,000 miles of transmission pipeline already transport natural gas across the country. Gathering lines carry natural gas, crude oil, and other hazardous liquids from production wells to processing facilities, refineries, or transmission pipelines. However, if domestic natural gas trends continue, the need for new pipelines could still be substantial.
