Nanotechnology in Periodontics

Periodontitis is a multifactorial polymicrobial infectious inflammatory disease of the tooth supporting structure. With upsurge of various treatment methodologies for treatment of periodontitis, nanotechnology has evolved as a promising mode of treatment. Nanotechnology and its application in periodontics have improved the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention of the periodontal diseases. It utilizes nanobiotechnology, nanomaterials, and nanorobots for the treatment and maintenance of periodontal health. Nanomaterials can be used to provide aid in the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity, can be used in dentifrices, nanofibers can be used as an adjunct to conventional fibers for local drug delivery and tissue engineering scaffolds, they can also be used for nano biomineralization, biomimicry or tooth repair, and nano textured implant surface.
