The author was on the facultyof the International ChristianUniversity in Tokyo for manyyears retiring as ProfessorEmeritus. He holds the Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania StateUniversity and the Ph.D. fromthe University of London. Hehas written books on educationin Japan including The JapaneseSchool, Ten Great Educators fromModern Japan, A History of the Japan Teachers Union, and Th e Historyof Modern Japanese Education: Constructing the National School System1872-1890. He and his wife live in Pennsylvania.
