It is midnight. igo Balboa, part of the Royal Couriers of the Catholic king, awaits impatiently for Captain Alatriste, Francisco de Quevedo, and Sebasti n Copons to arrive in Paris, where he is now delivering dispatches to the Count of Guadalmedina. It has been almost a year since they last saw each other, when that risky assignment in Venice came to an end.

These are difficult times for France: it's been months since, with some English support, the Huguenots at La Rochelle endure a terrible siege by French forces under the command of Cardenal Richelieu. By Quevedo's mediation, Alatriste and his friends get involved in a dangerous secret mission planed by the Count-Duke of Olivares.
