Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. On mentioning to some of my friends my intention to use the solidus notation, it met with a good deal of approval, and some of them expressed their readiness to join me in the use of it, amongst whom I may name Sir William Thomson and the late Professor Clerk Maxwell.
