Set against the backdrop of the oppression of the Kurdish people, a portrait of Joanna Al-Askan Hussain describes her marriage to a Kurdish freedom fighter, her own role in the struggle for Kurdish rights, the attack by Saddam Hussein's forces that left her temporarily blind and compelled her to flee for her life, and the genocide that killed more than 200,000 of her fellow Kurds.
