These are the
fascinating personal letters of Wilfred Sydney James Thornington who
became a senior civil servant and Deputy Director of Audit during
World War II. The first batch of letters were sent from New York
from late 1942 to mid-1943. The second batch were sent from Cairo
late 1943 to mid 1945. The final batch were sent in the middle of
1953 from Washington DC. These letters capture the wartime
atmosphere both in New York and the Middle East. His contribution to
the Lend Lease programme at the Exchequer Audit Department is covered
together with it's importance in World War II and how it worked in
practice.
