This book examines the way the theatre was embedded in the social and literary life of the sixteenth century. It does this by examining theatricality, a phenomenon which gained ground in the arts and letters and spilled over into the political and social world. It studies the status and practices of the theatre and theatricality at the time of the Renaissance.
