ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
Together in one volume, all four novels about the escapades of Claudine, a character who defied stereotypes and has an enduring hold on readers.
This single volume is a collection of the four novels Colette devoted to one of her iconic characters: the young and carefree Claudine. Published between 1900 and 1903, Claudine at School, Claudine in Par s, Claudine Married, and Claudine and Annie fascinated and scandalized society and had an enormous influence on French and international literature. Their impact can be seen in such classics as Lolita and Bonjour Tristesse, as well as countless autobiographies.
The story begins when the main character is fifteen and making new - and often sexually ambiguous - friendships at school. We see her discover city life in Paris and the sensuality of the belle poque. Later, she gets married, although she soon becomes infatuated with the wife of a friend and embarks on a lesbian adventure that broadens her horizons.
Championed by the feminist movement and prefiguring LGBTQ+ literature at a time when the category didn't even exist, these are novels that continue to delight with their skillful command of language, sense of humor, snapshots of a time, and irrepressible joie de vivre.
