Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that causes haemoglobin to undergo polymerisation, acquiring a "sickle-like" appearance. Children and adolescents with the disease experience various symptoms, including pain, with intense and frequent crises. In addition, sickle cell disease requires a great deal of assistance from caregivers, who, due to the routine of care and the dependence of patients, may have their physical and mental health impaired.
