This book, with its four parts, is considered a pioneer in the field of studying Arab journalism, as its first edition was published in 1913, and its author, Count Philippe de Tarazzi, sought to monitor the news of every Arab newspaper and magazine that appeared in the world, east and west, with the introduction of their owners, their editors, and the biographies of their famous people. The author says, "I divided the book into four sections or eras, so that each era covers a section of press news. Then I published it with a preface with eight chapters on the definition of journalism and its etiquette, the names of its historians, and other things that are important to know in order to complete the benefit, and I concluded it with a general table that includes the names of newspapers without exception." Of them as much as a researcher investigating the countries of the East can, I have arranged them according to the countries and Mamluks in which they appeared, following in the date of their issuance the system of oldest after oldest.
