Luitgard Dederich, 76, recalls: her first marriage, marked by abuse, from which she had a daughter; the subsequent divorce, in which she had no rights whatsoever as a woman; her second marriage to an alcoholic and drug-addicted man with whom she had two more children, the oppression and abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother, the many challenges she faced as a working mother, and her third marriage to the much older Hartmut, who was finally able to offer her, her three children, and their daughter security-albeit in a very particular way. At the heart of this biography, however, are the relationships with her four biological daughters, which combine light and shadow and range from close bonds to rejection.
