For 2 Cents, I'll Go with You: A Novel of the Great War
Walter "Pat" Lusk is a lonely and bored young man working as a shipping clerk. Desperate for adventure, he dreams of glory serving in the trenches of war-torn France, so in April 1917 he enlists, full of youthful enthusiasm and patriotic fervor. At first he enjoys his training and the camaraderie of his buddies in the medical department. Once in France, however, he is utterly unprepared for the horror of mechanized war and the heart-rending loss day after day. The medics of Evacuation Hospital No. 4 manage to survive the war, only to face a strange new illness causing fever, cough, and uncontrollable bleeding among the wounded. Then Pat wakes up with a headache and cough.
So much for glory.
