C. C. Van Dine (1888–1939) was the pseudonym of American writer, journalist, and art critic Willard Huntington Wright. Educated and versatile, he wrote articles on theater and art for the Encyclopedia Britannica, published books on painting, literature, and music, but it was his detective fiction that brought him real fame. Van Dine was one of the founders of the "golden age" of the detective genre, and the author of "Twenty Rules for Detective Writers," which formed the classic canons of the genre.His main character is Philo Vance, a brilliant amateur detective, intellectual, and art connoisseur who combines the traits of Sherlock Holmes and an aristocratic snob.
