This book deals mainly with the common species used for aquafarming in India, and however, few popular species cultured in other countries are also dealt with for the benefit of the students of aquaculture. We have made a sincere attempt to collect maxilnum information available relating to the particular species such as the common name, systematic position, salient characters, habit, habitat, distribution, food and feeding, reproduction, economic importance, growth, breeding, seed availability, culture methods and production where ever possible. All the information are put in a nutshell and elaborate descriptions and explanations could not be given as they are beyond the scope of this book. The academic infonnation are put under few heads such as common name, classification, salient features, biology and culture. The readers can get additional information about the species we have covered and many more species from the references listed in the chapter on Further readings. We feel that this book would be of itnmense use to the students of fisheries, aquaculturists and entrepreneurs.
