Bengal Renaissance and Cultural Awakening in North Bengal
The proliferation of newspapers, periodicals, and several associations served as crucial forums for disseminating new ideas. Aitihasik Chitra, published by Akshay Kumar Maitra from Rajshahi, was India’s first historical account written in any native language. Even Kolkata – the seat of renaissance – could not have conceived of such an undertaking. Yet the intelligentsia of North Bengal not only conceived it but also implemented it.
The Brahmo Samaj, which promoted social reform and rational free-thinking, gradually permeated in different districts of North Bengal, leading to a gradual modernization of its social and cultural fabric. The impact of the Renaissance in North Bengal is the most distinctive feature of the present work.
