Atriplex Halimus L.

This book presents a comprehensive exploration of Atriplex halimus L. (Guetaf), a perennial halophytic shrub that thrives in harsh environments and has long served as both a food source and a traditional medicine. The opening review article examines its phytochemical richness, nutritional properties, ecological role, and broad pharmacological activities. Four original research articles then provide experimental evidence of the protective and curative effects of aqueous A. halimus extracts against chemical-induced toxicities in rats. Specifically, its efficacy was evaluated against benzene and sodium benzoate-induced hematotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity. Across studies, the plant restored antioxidant defenses, normalized biochemical parameters, and repaired histopathological damage, with preventive supplementation showing stronger benefits than post-exposure treatment. Together, these findings establish A. halimus as a natural bridge between food and medicine, with significant prospects as a functional food, phytomedicine, and sustainable resource for human and animal health.
