A handful are also set in foreign locales where West, like her protagonist Gracie, has had the good fortune to travel. 'Apple of My Eye' was inspired by a friend's recounting of an unusual incident that occurred on the grounds of an apple orchard she and her husband own. West's imagination immediately began to suggest possible backstories for this mystery, and she then borrowed some information from an unrelated local murder case that had taken place a few years before. Merging these, she created 'Apple of My Eye.' West holds a Ph.D. in English and enjoys history, languages, music, science and travel. She is a great supporter of animals. Like Gracie, she lives in a rural part of the Northeastern United States, travels often and widely, and is an accomplished cook. West writes her novels under a nom de plume borrowed from a paternal great great great grandmother.
