Five-year-old Annie Smith's life is dramatically changed when her mother suddenly dies on the Kansas prairie in 1879.

Facing the struggles and challenges of growing up Annie is left to find comfort in her mother's locket, courage from her letters, love from the pages of a diary and the cherished memories from her aunt's stories.

Keeping her father's dream alive, that others would stop to visit and leave a flower at her mother's grave, soothed her thoughts through childhood. But what if no one ever stopped or left a flower?

As a young woman, Annie feels an urgent need to re-visit her mother's grave. She hopes to enlist the help of her brothers. She wonders if it is possible to find it, fifteen years later.
