Present-day academia often asserts the necessity for interdisciplinary research without asking what exactly is meant by 'interdisciplinarity' in the first place and what it can be precisely. Also, this call for cooperation is made irrespective of specific disciplines and groups of academic professionals. This leaves open the question as to what challenges or even problems come up for specific disciplines and departments. These papers offer answers to this question as well as clarifications of the notion of interdisciplinarity as a challenge for both the humanities and social sciences. The contributors grant insight into the diversity and complexity of this demand for interdisciplinarity from the perspectives of philosophy, law, literary studies, economics as well as historiography.
