Should we Understand the Spectrum of Sex as Linear?

Essay from the year 2022 in the subject Gender Studies, Bielefeld University (Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology), course: Feminist Philosophy of Science, language: English, abstract: This essay deals with the questions of whether gender is a linear spectrum like the colour spectrum with a multitude of sex identities lying between the two poles of male and female, and if we should rather understand gender as a spectrum that spreads out like the stars in the sky. The binary concept of gender and sex is rethought and important works, i.e., from Anne Fausto-Sterling and Claire Ainsworth, are reviewed.
